As the song goes, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.” Looking after your teeth is very important. There is nothing that can bring confidence than to smile and show pearly white teeth. To maintain good teeth, it is important that you visit your local dentist and have dental checkups. Below are a few reminders that you can follow to help you maintain good dental hygiene.

  1. Brush your teeth regularly.

The simplest and most proven way of maintaining good dental hygiene is to brush your teeth at least two times a day. Plaque and other food particles are removed when you brush your teeth so it is important to do this on a regular basis. When brushing your teeth, brush it in circular motions to be able to carefully remove every food particle that may still be stuck in your teeth.

  1. Use dental floss and tongue scraper regularly.

No matter how much you brush your teeth, there will still be a few particles left that your toothbrush cannot reach. For this, you should use dental floss to remove the leftover food particles. When using dental floss, do not use it rigorously as it may cause your gums to bleed.

Aside from that, if you haven’t used a tongue scraper before, then today may be the right time to do so. A tongue scraper is a tool used to clean the tongue. You simply bend it and then scrape your tongue. It is a more effective tool to use in cleaning your tongue than simply using your toothbrush.

  1. Lessen your intake of acidic drinks.

Acidic drinks such as soft drinks, fruit juices, etc. can soften and dissolve minerals in tooth enamel that can cause holes in your tooth. These holes are what we commonly know as cavities. Having cavities is an unpleasant feeling because you can feel a numbing pain in your teeth when you drink cold or hot drinks. Severe cavities happen when the holes in your teeth already reach the surface of your gum. It is easier and cheaper to prevent cavities from forming rather than finding a way to fix them once they are already there.

  1. Do not use your teeth for anything except chewing.

Sometimes we tend to use our teeth for other things like cracking nuts, opening bottles and ripping packages. However, if you really want to take care of your teeth, it would be wise not to do so. Using your teeth for other things can cause chipping. You wouldn’t want your teeth to have a chip on the sides, right?

  1. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride.

It is better to use toothpaste that contains fluoride because fluoride helps in protecting the cover of your teeth. It hardens the enamel of your teeth to prevent decaying.

  1. Establish a regular meeting with your dentist.

Even if you feel that your teeth are really healthy, it is still best to visit your dentist every six months. Aside from having regular dental cleaning, you should also ask your dentist if there is anything that needs to be fixed with your teeth. There are also different dentists that tackle each problem that your teeth may have. A general dentist handles dental cleanings, fixing chipped teeth, fixing cavities, etc. Other kinds of dentists also handle different cases like assembling braces, doing root canal procedures and other dental surgeries that you may need.

Above are simple and repetitive tips in maintaining dental health that other people may also tell us to do. No matter how old we are, we should not disregard taking care of our teeth.
